Hey guys, Max Perzon here. But for today's video, I want to talk about three things that you must do if you want to succeed online as a roofing or solar contractor and I have some notes in front of me as well. So let's dive right into it. So the first thing is that you need to own your own online sales system. Okay? You need to own your own online sales system for your roofing or solar business.
And that means no more lead generation sites, you know, home advisor AngiesList, Porch. And all of these sites get rid of them because we all know that you get duplicate leads. There are expensive either to $130 per lead and you're not building your own platform. And what I mean by that is that when you generate the lead on when someone calls into your business, you're not building your own platform. And when I talk about platform, I mean first of all, a CRM system, are you saving those leads into CRM system so that you can follow up with them. But more importantly, since you're building in generating leads on a third party platform or on a Legion sites, you're not getting them to your own website and you're not building what's called audiences. So an audience is kind of the new online platform. It's the new email list, if you will.
And what is an audience? Well, when you sign up for, for example, Facebook business manager or a Google ads, you can install a pixel on your website. And when someone comes to your website or they see your Facebook ad just once a week, Instagram ads, just one, you can save them from to your own audience so that you can retargeting and what retargeting is that if someone comes to your website, you can just start to show them ads all day, every single day. Then you become omnipresent. You appear everywhere all the time. So you can show them Facebook ads every single day. Instagram ads, every single day. YouTube videos every single day. And Google display network ads was banner ads every single day as well. And I'm sure that you have experienced this, you know, we can go to Amazon for example. You look in a pair of shoes and then those shoe starts to appear for you everywhere.
And when you utilize a third party platform and when you're not owning your own online sales system, but you're just signing up for home advisor because you think that's easy and you do every, all of the lead generation on their platform, you're not building your own audience, you're not building our own CRM system and you're missing out on all of these opportunities. So that's the first and most important thing you need to figure out, okay, how do I get an online sales system set up for my business that I own and control myself? I am not dependent on home advisor. I'm not dependent on a advertising agency that does the work for me. And if I stopped paying him, he's just gonna take that online steel sales system and disappear. No, no, no. You want to own the system yourself. We want to own this CRM system and ourselves.
You want to own the marketing automation system and you want to own and control that. And that's super important. So that's my first point on your own online sales system. It's super important. I can, I can say it enough to make sure that you have that one right. The second thing that you need to fix if you want to succeed online as an uh, roofing or solar contractor is that you need to start doing direct response advertising, direct response advertising. And you need to do that online with ads. So what direct response advertising ads is, is that you craft your ads in a way that you, you want the direct response, you want the person who sees the ad to dust to do something, to take any specific action. Like any type of call to action for example, we request a free estimate and so forth. So you want to be able to track that. So when you spend advertising dollars every single month and you do it with direct response advertising, you want to be able to track everything.
How much did we pay per click, how much did with paper lead, how much do you need it with paper called and how much did we pay to acquire new customer? And that might sound super hard and like how am I going to do that? How am I going to set up direct response advertising for my Ruben solid company? I don't even know what it is. Where do I start? Well, when you know how to do it, then when you have someone showing you how to do it, it's super, super simple. It's like an Ikea furniture, right? I'm Swedish, so, eh, yeah, Ikea. I, I've been to a Kia a bunch of times and what they do is super cool, right? They just give you instructions. Here's how you set up the furniture and just follow along the instructions. And then you have the furniture, furniture that you can enjoy for a spark for as long as you want to for lifetime if you want to.
So that's what we do as well. We just give you the instructions, here's how you set up the system and here's how we track it. It takes 10 to 15 minutes per day, just report on the numbers. And when you do, you own and control your system and you're doing direct response advertising that you own and control yourself and you can track them. Super important because you don't want to throw money against the wall and kinda not knowing where the leads are coming from. And maybe some leads start to start to come in like team or radio commercials for example. Maybe you do some offline marketing, you do TV commercials, radio commercials, and you do some direct mail campaigns and you do some door knocking and you might do some SEO and then at the end of the month, if you look at your advertising budget, okay, okay, right, we spend $5,000 and we got some leads, but where did the leads come from?
You have no idea. Should we stop the TV commercials and do more of the direct mail or should we keep the TV commercials and skip the SEL? Because if you can attract anything, you have no idea how to scale. But when you have a system like ours and direct response that we show you how you can set up and own yourself, you don't need us, you don't need me, we just show you how to do it. When you have that online sales system in place and when you do only in advertising using direct response techniques, you know exactly, Hey, this specific ad worked really, really good. This ad worked a lot better than those other three yet. Let's just remove those three ads and let's put all of our advertising budget into this ad. And then you can just crank it up and scale that out.
And then you're getting more leads, you know exactly from where the leads are coming from. It's a game changer and direct response has been long, been around for a long, long time. Um, and it's, um, it's, you know, David Ogilvy and those geniuses. Uh, so yeah, direct response is the way when you want to do online advertising and it works really, really good for the roof in the solar industry. Obviously it works for every, every industry, uh, but specifically, uh, more specifically, it works really, really good on Facebook right now because everyone is competing on Google and doing Google ads and SEO and utilizing those legions sites such as home advisor still. So when we take our customers and we show their page, here's how we do direct response advertising on Facebook. And here's how we set up your own online sale system. And they started to do that on Facebook.
They get crazy good results because they don't have as much competition as on Google, so they have less competition, they get cheaper leads, higher quality leads and exclusive leads on Facebook. So direct response advertising on Facebook is crazy, crazy good. So that's the second thing you need to do direct response ads and the first thing was to only control your own things system. The third thing is branding. You need to start branding your company as well. And this is actually a thing that has been very hard to do up until this point. It has been very time consuming to new branding up until very recently and it has been very costly to do branding as well up until very, very recently. And the first of all, what is branding? Well, how I define branding is what is the perception of your company? Do you control the perception of you of your company?
What do homeowners in your area or your state think about your company? Do they even know about, know anything about the company? Do they even know that your company exists? That's like the first step, get known. And then when you get known, you want to control the perception of your company. That's really what branding is. So when I think of Nike for example, or Nike, how would I be? You want to think of it or man say it right. And when I think of Nike, I don't necessarily think of shoes. I think of athletes and athletics and that's what their branding is all about. You know, they want to honor great athletics and they want to honor great athletes. And when I think of Nike, I think of Jordan or I think of like tiger woods and all of these athletes and that's their branding strategy and they're pumping it in, I don't know how much money, ton of money to branding and advertise advertising, but you don't really notice it.
The match with branding because they are controlling their perception of their company really, really good. And when I think of Apple, you know, sure, I think of computers, but more than that I think of like design. I think of high quality products. Uh, you know, that look really good, that work really well. I think of great software. I think of Steve jobs, you know, all of his minimalist, his clothes, his glasses, you know, on the, they're always improving. They're always, uh, you know, all of these things. The last thing I'm thinking about is like boom, or like gym, the technology. So branding is like, how do you, what is the person perception of your company and how do you control that? Because if you're only doing direct response advertising, and I used to do that alone for a long time. You know, I thought that branding was just bad.
I thought it was just, you know, something that um, you know, bigger advertising indices did because they didn't know how to do direct response. So they just created a bunch of branding stuff because you couldn't track anything. So you couldn't tell if it was bad or good. It just looked good. But, so I, I used to think that branding was not a good thing because, you know, TV commercials are super expensive and billboards are expensive and magazines are just, ah, I don't know. So I was like, Hey, let's just figure out the direct response game. Have an online sales system and let's just crank the money into that because we could track it. And it worked really, really well. But then I learned from someone that, you know, now up until very recently when we can you place social media when everyone is walking in, you know, watching down on their phones all day.
Uh, you don't have to advertise on that TV anymore. You can do branding, understand because everyone is watching this thing. You can share videos on this thing very cheaply on Instagram and on Facebook and on YouTube. And that means that you can do branding very cheaply and very effectively as well. So I thought, Hmm, I wonder what happens if we implement a branding campaign for one of our most successful customers because they were doing the direct response and only sales system part. Very, very good. So I thought, how can we get even better results? Maybe we should try to do branding campaign, just showing their high quality videos on social media with paid traffic, which is super cheap compared to TV. So we did that. We did both for our direct response and we started to share their videos with paid traffic, just getting the bunch of views online or from Facebook and Instagram, um, for their high quality branding videos.
So we started to control the perception of third company. We started to control the, the um, the branding, right. So what happened, we got even better results, even more people and started to call in, but more importantly their sales process become, became a lot, lot easier. Why? Because when people saw their directly sponsored and they requested a fee estimate and they set an appointment and so forth. And prior, you know, when the sales person came out to the homeowner, that was the first impression of that company that the homeowner of got because we had not shared in the videos yet. So they were like, yeah, hopefully they trusted and liked the company and they signed up to be, to become a customer. But what happened after we started to implement this branding and started to share more videos was that when the safe person came to, to the homeowner and started to educate them about their shingles or their solar panels or whatever, and now my DUI, that homeowner already knew that competence, he, she, he or she had already seen the sales person on the branding videos.
So she trusted him a lot more even before they ever got there. So she, she or he didn't have the guard up. She was like, she was happy that they were there and she, she recognized them and she liked them already because we had did the branding part really, really well. So that would be my third tip. Do branding on social media. And if you mix that with an online sales system that you own and you mix that with direct response ad and then branding, you know, that is how you truly succeed online right now as an roofer or [inaudible]. And I know that this might sound, if you, if you're not used to advertising yourself or if this sounds very new to you, uh, maybe it's sounds a bit confusing and I, I just think this is so much fun to talk about.
